Orange Coast College names new vice president of instruction
Previous Santiago Canyon College administrator John Weispfenning will be taking over the role of vice president of instruction at Orange Coast College July 2.
Weispfenning has served as Dean of Library, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Santiago since 2007. At OCC, he will oversee instructional divisions, curriculum, instructional planning, academic scheduling and accreditation. Weispfenning is replacing interim vice president of Instruction Ron Johnson who was hired last year.
“OCC enjoys a national reputation for transfer, career training, sports, sailing and so much more,” Weispfenning said. “I look forward to working with the faculty, staff and administrators to meet the needs of our students in these challenging economic times."
Before joining Santiago Canyon College, Weispfenning worked for 10 years as an associate professor of communications at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio and was appointed the school’s the associate dean for academic affairs in 2005.
“John brings to our campus an impressive record of academic excellence and high-level expertise in strategic planning,” said Dennis Harkins, OCC president. “He’s a skilled communicator and proven leader who understands both the challenges and opportunities facing California’s community colleges.”
Weispfenning received his doctorate from Purdue University, a master’s degree from North Dakota State University and a bachelor’s degree from Minnesota State University. He began his career as a journalist and also served as executive director of the Speech Communication Association of Ohio and as a member of the Executive Board of the Council of Chief Librarians of the California Community Colleges.
