United Way raises more than $165,000 at annual 5k
More than 2,700 people came out and raised $165,000 at the fourth annual Walk United event put on by Orange County United Way at Angel Stadium of Anaheim June 9.
Orange County United Way (OCUW) is a nonprofit organization that focuses on providing education and care for the more than 300,000 Orange County residents living below the poverty line. Eight of the 90 programs the organization supports are located in Anaheim.
Radio host Ginny Harman from station Go Country 105.1 served as MC for the event for the fourth year in a row. The 3.1-mile walk around Angel Stadium started at 9:30 a.m. and was led by Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait, CEO of OCUW Max Gardner, Chairman of the Angels Baseball Foundation Mark Merhab and OCUW Board Member Gregg Martin.
“WALK UNITED is growing by leaps and bounds and we couldn’t be more excited. This is our fourth year and it’s definitely the best. More than 2,700 people came out to take a stand to overcome poverty and their participation made a statement about the power of collective impact, showing that by working together, we can create long-lasting change in our community,” said Max Gardner, president and CEO of Orange County United Way.
Due to Anaheim’s participation, the city received 100 free tickets to an Angel’s game to donate to a nonprofit. Western Digital of Irvine was named the Top Fundraising Team and Rookie of the Year for raising more than $20,000 by its participation; 108 employees from the technology company turned out for the event to walk and raise money. UPS received the Corporate Challenge Award for recruiting the most walkers at 500.
Food and refreshments were provided by local food trucks such as Crepes Bonaparte and live music from five local bands. Kids were able to play at the Kid-at-Heart Zone sponsored by Wells Fargo and local businesses set up shop in a Community Village.
